Well I guess one blessing is that he wasn't potty trained yet. I was going to start as soon as we got back from vacation...but that got postponed for obvious reasons.
Well here's the answer. There is a cutout going from the front to the back. Then we pretty much stuff the diaper up it....as you can see in the picture above. The diaper has to be changed often because the cast will get nasty if we don't. And who wants a stinky peed on cast for 6 weeks...nope nope.
There is a problem with just a tucked diaper. Whenever Dexter moves around (which he does often) it gets pulled out, or sometimes he just does this. We have had some fun moments around here, and just hope when visitors come that he doesn't have an exhibitionist moment.

During the day he's pretty cheerful, and the cast doesn't seem to bother him. At night is the complete opposite. When he's in the most relaxed part of sleep his whole body will suddenly try to stretch itself out. He then wakes up and just screams because it hurt him, and startled him awake. Sadly, we can't help him. We had tried to not give him as much of his medicine, but it's still necessary at night so he can just sleep through these.
Baths are done by sponge bathing. We have to pick him up to transfer him everywhere. From the floor, to his "special" (aka reclining rocking) chair, to the dining room table, to the bed. He's not heavy for short periods, but just awkward to hold.

He did have his first appointment up here. Of course the day of his appointment is the day of a huge snowstorm, and we forgot the x-rays. We left 1.5 hours early to get to the hospital in SLC, then at 9 miles away from our house we turn around to get the x-rays. Then we arrive an hour late to our appointment. Yeah fun day of driving in the snow.
The doctors told us though that he may be able to get his cast off one week early. Hooray! They mentioned that he'll try to do whatever he wants with the cast and that's okay. He may even be walking by the time we return. Its hard to picture how he'll do that, but she said he would find his own way. It was also mentioned that his broken leg may grow longer than his other leg, with the growth plate trying to overcompensate for the break. So it will need some monitoring over time.
He smiled, but with a sore throat and cold it turned into a scowl |
Yesterday the weather was even above freezing, sunny, and relatively nice outside so we took a 30 minute stroll. Him in the stroller, and Ellie in my ergo. Hopefully we'll have a few more of those spread out.
